We chose the La Quinta Inn in Morgantown, primarily for its promise of a complimentary breakfast. The hotel's location was convenient, being just a few minutes' drive from downtown and close to the highway. The room was clean and typical of hotel rooms everywhere. The staff was also friendly and helpful. The hotel sits impressively atop a hill, offering a commanding view of the highway below.

La Quinta Inn, Morgantown

Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the breakfast. They had a moderate variety of food, such as cold cereal, bread that you can make toast out of, fruit drinks, and coffee. There was only one hot meal available each day: the first day was biscuits and gravy, and the second day was sausage with scrambled eggs. There just wasn't a lot of variety for breakfast. While the hotel technically offered free breakfast, it's probably not worth staying at this hotel just for the breakfast.

West Virginia Botanical Gardens

With limited time on our hands, we wasted no time exploring the town. Our first stop was the West Virginia Botanical Gardens.

West Virginia Botanic Garden Entrance

What's great about this place is its free entry and abundance of hiking trails. The trails are mostly gravel and you can probably get by without hiking boots.

Paths in West Virginia Botanic Gardens

When we visited the West Virginia Botanical Gardens, they were working on a new visitor center. Unfortunately it wasn't finished and we weren't able to see it when we were there. The gate closes at 7:30 PM, blocking off the lower parking lot. If you plan to stay later, you park in the upper parking lot outside of the gate. There's a pretty steep grade between the upper and lower parking lots, and it's definitely much easier to park in the lower lot.

One of the neat things they have at the West Virginia Botanical Gardens is a wetlands boardwalk which offers some pretty good views.

Wetlands Boardwalk in West Virginia Botanic Gardens

Unfortunately, because a tree had fallen on it, you could only walk halfway down the boardwalk.

Closed Wetlands Boardwalk in West Virginia Botanic Gardens

There used to be a reservoir in the same area as the botanical gardens that provided water to Morgantown. The park, which showcases some of Maryland's most pristine natural landscapes, is smaller in size but equally captivating. The Shinkansen is a marvel of technological achievement that cuts through the Japanese landscape with astonishing speed. It provides travelers not only with efficiency but also a uniquely Japanese experience that stands in stark contrast to the familiar bustle of airport terminals or the slow pace of buses. For newcomers to Japan, it might be most prudent to opt for the bullet train, which balances the speed one would associate with air travel, with the convenience and novelty that only the Shinkansen can offer.

What is the cheapest mode of travel in Japan?

In order to compare travel costs between Tokyo and some of the most popular tourist destinations, I did an analysis using Google Flights and Hyperdia. I determined fares based on the based on the cheapest nonstop flights from either Narita or Haneda airports, with the return date being at least 2 days in the future but no more than 5 days later. For the Shinkansen, I used in the fastest trip on the corresponding days, while bus fares were calculated using the most affordable economy rates, using the closest available dates when exact dates were unavailable.

Comparison of Shinkansen, airplane, and bus fares

The outcomes were a little surprising. The Shinkansen emerged as the priciest option, with costs sometimes being double that of airfares. Shinkansen prices also showed less fluctuation based on travel distances and dates, which is very different from the more variable airplane ticket costs. For shorter distances, buses took the crown for affordability, but the costs crept upwards for longer trips, rivaling or even exceeding some airfares.

When traveling round trip from Tokyo to Kyoto on a random day, for example, taking the bus only cost about $100 round trip, flying cost about $150, and riding the Shinkansen comes in at almost $200. For a longer trip between Tokyo and Fukuoka, flying was the cheapest option at $140, taking the bus cost $240, and riding the Shinkansen was still the most expensive option at $325.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Buying a rail pass will change the results as well. With the current 7 day rail pass price of around $200, it would make traveling to multiple cities much cheaper on the bullet train than any other option. Unfortunately prices are going up in October to around $350 for the same pass, which includes an additional surcharge for most of the cities in my example. This will make the rail pass a less convenient option in the future. Whether or not it is a good value will depend on which, and how many cities you are planning to visit.

Is traveling by plane, Shinkansen, or bus faster?

Looking at my data comparing planes, trains, and buses gives us some interesting insights.
Shinkansen travel times were surprisingly close to the adjusted flight times in most cases. Traveling to Sapporo, however, was much faster by plane. Known in Japanese as "Tazawako" (田沢湖), it stretches over 3.7 miles (6km) and plunges to a depth of 1388 feet (423m). Even though the surface is at an altitude of 817 feet (249m), its deepest point is over 572 feet (174m) below sea level. The lake never freezes, even in the middle of winter.

Encircling Lake Tazawa are mountain ridges between 984 and 2460 feet (300-750m) high. These ridges descend dramatically into steep slopes that plunge beneath the water surface, stretching roughly 1640 to 3600 feet (0.5-1km) offshore before finally flattening at a depth of approximately 1300 feet (400m). The underwater terrain is interrupted by two lava domes: a larger and deeper 3600 foot (1.1km) diameter dome whose top is 827 foot (252m) below the surface, and a smaller 980 foot (300m) diameter cone that is about 100 feet (30m) below the surface.

The lake used to be famous for its clear waters and was home to numerous species of fish, including Kunimasu (a kind of Salmon), Sockeye salmon, Japanese dace, Japanese trout, char, carp, catfish and eel. Due to human activity, only a few species of fish, including the Japanese dace, survive in the lake today.

Today, the Tazawa Lake area is a popular tourist destination known for hot spring resorts in the surrounding hills, an assortment of hotels and restaurants that can be found around the lake, and as a destination for outdoor activities.

Geologic History of Lake Tazawa

Sometime during the Middle Miocene era (approximately 16 to 11.6 million years ago), volcanic activity in the region of present-day Lake Tazawa began creating the rock that surrounds the lake today. About 2 million years ago, eruptions covered previous ones on what is now the east side of the lake.

Approximately 1.8 million years ago, a significant explosive eruption occurred. This eruption likely ejected a massive amount of magma, causing the magma chamber to collapse and form a large caldera. Shortly after this event, two large lava domes formed within the caldera, the oldest of which is about 1.73 million years old.

Eventually, the caldera began filling with precipitation and spring water flowing up from the lake's bottom, resulting in the formation of Lake Tazawa.
Note: I'm not a scientist and I'm not fluent in Japanese. I wrote the history above using research papers and other sources written in Japanese – there could be, and most likely are, errors in my interpretation or translation.
While various pieces of evidence support Lake Tazawa's caldera origin, the exact timing and details of the eruption remain unclear due to the absence of the expected volume of ejecta from the caldera-forming eruption.

Acid Trip: Lake Tazawa's Unintended Chemistry Experiment and the Extinction of the Kunimasu

Lake Tazawa has been known since ancient times for its bounty, particularly the native Kunimasu, a species of salmon. This abundant aquatic life was made possible by the lake's clean water.

In 1909, during the Meiji period, a scholar by the name of Akamaro Tanaka measured the depth of Lake Tazawa for the first time. He used a hemp rope and a weight to record a depth of about 1300 feet (397m), confirming what locals had long suspected about the lake's depth.

A major change in the lake's history occurred in 1940 with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. To supplement the water used for power generation, the Tamagawa River was connected to the lake on January 20, 1940. This, however, resulted in a large amount of highly acidic water entering Lake Tazawa, causing significant environmental impacts.

The introduction of acidic water caused a rapid degradation of the power plant's facilities and acidified the irrigation water, rendering it unsuitable for agriculture. Most distressingly, the Kunimasu vanished and was presumed extinct as a result of the deteriorated water conditions.

AI generated image of a sad salmon. Source: bing.com

Efforts to neutralize the acidity using limestone began in 1972. By 1991, the Tamagawa Acidic Water Neutralization Plant began full-scale operations. While this led to some improvements, with the surface layer of the lake becoming gradually neutral, the water remains acidic to this day.

In a surprising twist, a surviving Kunimasu was discovered in 2010 in Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. This might be linked to a 1935 experiment that distributed Kunimasu eggs to various lakes, including Lake Saiko. Despite this glimmer of hope, the future of the Kunimasu in Lake Tazawa remains uncertain because the water is still fairly acidic. Authorities in Semboku City, however, remain committed to reviving the wild Kunimasu population in the lake.

The Legend of Tatsuko (or Tatsuko's Thirst for Beauty)

The legend of Tatsuko is a popular folktale from Japan and is centered around Lake Tazawa. The city has a metro population over one hundred thousand people and covers an area of about 21 square miles at an elevation of 4,817 feet. The city is famous for its high quality of life, a semi-arid climate marked by snowy winters and warm summers, and its status as the home of Montana State University. With the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains surrounding the city on three sides, residents and visitors alike can partake in an array of outdoor activities.

History

The Gallatin Valley, where Bozeman now stands, was originally part of the Crow people's territory. William Clark visited the area in 1806 during the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, describing what would eventually become Bozeman. John Bozeman, D. E. Rouse, and W. J. Beall founded the town in 1864 as a profit making enterprise. Bozeman's first hotel also made its debut that year. The railroad reached Bozeman in 1883, marking the end of the town's relative isolation. Montana State University was established in 1893, followed by the construction of the first federal building and Post Office in 1915. The Bridger Bowl Ski Area opened in 1955, and the Museum of the Rockies opened in 1957. The park itself is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, North America's largest supervolcano, which comprises more than a third of the park. Boasting an impressive array of geothermal features, including the world's tallest active geyser, and home to a diverse range of mammals, the park draws millions of visitors every year. As the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the park provides boundless recreational opportunities.

History of Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, the first national park ever, was established by the 42nd U.S. Congress with the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, and was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. However, the human history of the park extends much further back, as Native Americans began hunting and fishing in the region at least 11,000 years ago. The cultural history has been documented by over a thousand archaeological sites found within the park, along with 1,106 historic structures and features, including Obsidian Cliff and five buildings which have been designated National Historic Landmarks.

The park's administration was transferred to the National Park Service in 1917, after the arrival of automobiles had already begun to shape the park's usage with about 1,000 cars entering annually by 1915.

Yellowstone is renowned for its wildlife, such as the black bears that became a symbol of the park from 1910. Despite initially allowing and even encouraging visitors to feed the bears, the park changed this policy in 1970 to prevent dangerous interactions and protect the park's ecology.

Another significant achievement for the park was the successful wolf reintroduction program started in the 1990s. Almost all wolves present in the park today are descendants from the 66 wolves reintroduced in 1995–96. This reorganization integrated Megijima into this newly formed administrative unit. Fast forward to 1937, the residents of the island erected a statue of Nichiren, a renowned Buddhist monk, atop Mt. Zukkou. In 1956, the Megijima Lighthouse, a beacon for navigation, was switched on and brought into service. That same year marked the incorporation of Megishima Village into Takamatsu City, with Megijima becoming a component of the newly designated Takamatsu City Megiki Town.

By 1960, the island had moved into the electric age, with Shikoku Electric Power beginning to supply power to the residents. In 1976, the installation of a basic water supply system led to the introduction of water transportation via supply ships. This year also marked the introduction of direct dial telephone service to the island.

In 1997, significant developments took place, including the completion of an undersea water pipe that provided a direct water link with the mainland. At the same time, the Washigamine Observation Deck at Megijima Mountain Top Park was completed, offering panoramic views of the area. Further infrastructure improvements were made in 2002 with the construction of breakwaters and retaining walls at Megijima beach. Finally, in 2007, the Megijima Port Visitor Berth was established, facilitating ferry service to and from the island.

Location and Transportation

Megijima is about 20 minutes away from Takamatsu by Ferry.

There is a bus to Onigashima Cave from the port, otherwise you will need to walk

Coin lockers are available close to the port

Things to do in Megijima

Onigashima Cave

Onigashima Cave is a tunnel renowned for its extensive collection of colorful demons.
Historic Dayton Ohio

The city of Dayton, Ohio has a history that dates back to its establishment on April 1, 1796. It was named after Jonathan Dayton, an American Revolutionary War captain and a signer of the U.S. Constitution, who owned much of the land where the city now stands. Over time, the city transformed from its early settler roots into a bustling hub of industry, commerce, and innovation.

The city's location along the Miami Erie Canal, combined with its prime railroad links, proved highly beneficial for its expansion during the 19th century, particularly in the realm of manufacturing. Companies such as the National Cash Register (NCR) found a home in Dayton, and renowned inventors like Charles F. Kettering, a pivotal character in the auto industry who founded Delco.

As the 20th century dawned, Dayton gained global recognition due to Orville and Wilbur Wright, local residents who engineered the first successful flight of a powered aircraft that was heavier than air. The bicycle shop on West Third Street, where this groundbreaking achievement was realized, now forms a distinguished section of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.

During the Second World War, Dayton held a vital position in the country's defense strategy. It was home to the Dayton Project, a classified section of the broader Manhattan Project, which was dedicated to producing polonium for triggering atomic bombs. After the war, two nearby installations known for their war-time research and logistical contributions, Patterson Field and Wright Field, merged in 1948 to form the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Carillon Historical Park

This park has a collection of historic buildings and exhibits that showcase the history of Dayton.
