The town of Cataract was founded in 1851. The Cataract Falls Covered Bridge was built in 1876. The generous donation of 38 acres, including  the Upper and Lower falls, by Agnes Steiner Stuckey in 1952 to the state of Indiana allowed for the creation of the park.
